When To Keep Your Child Home From School
In the school environment, students have increased physical contact with each other. Germs can spread rapidly under these conditions. The guidelines below are offered in order to protect all students and to prevent the spread of illnesses.
Please keep your child home from school if he or she has any of the following conditions:
- Harsh, frequent cough, especially if the cough is producing mucous
- Temperature of 100 degrees or above
- Diarrhea and/or vomiting
- Yellow or green drainage from the nose
- Rash that appears to be spreading
- Weeping or crusty lesions on the face or body
- Head lice
- Red eyes with itching and drainage
- Sore throat accompanied by fever
These conditions are symptoms of contagious diseases. Working together, we can keep other students and staff from getting sick.
Other guidelines to remember with regard to your child’s health status are:
If your child is at home due to a strep infection or pink eye, they are not to return to school until they have had 24 hours of antibiotics.
Open sores or injuries should be covered to prevent secondary infection during the school day.
If your child becomes injured and is unable to participate in regularly scheduled physical activity such as recess and PE, a doctor’s note is required to alter the daily activities.
If your child will require special accommodations such as a wheelchair or other medical assistance device, please contact the school so that we can create an individual plan for your child.
Finally, remember that students requiring medications or dietary changes at school need to have specific orders from their physician.
If you have any questions please contact your child’s teacher or the school nurse.
